Ilja's Story

“You don’t see the strings, do you?”

Sexual exploitation under threats and coercion:
In this video, Ilja explains how her financial difficulties were exploited to trap her into debt. Traffickers then threatened to mutilate her or harm a family member – unless she worked for them in the sex industry. At first she agreed to lose a finger. But she was pushed into a male voyeur club environment and forced to work. What was presented to her as one week of work became three years.

Lives in unclean, cramped or overcrowded accommodation

Lives and is employed at the same location

Does not have many/any personal possessions

ISOLATION

Financial difficulties

Seems under the control or influence of others

No friends or family around them

RESTRICTED MOVEMENT

Has little opportunity to move freely and may have had their travel documents retained e.g. passports

Is dropped off/collected for work either very early or late at night on a regular basis

Has no official identification documents

RELUCTANT TO SEEK HELP

Avoids eye contact and/or appears frightened

Is hesitant to talk to strangers

Does not know who to trust or where to get help
